Warm the honey and butter together over gentle heat until melted, then stir in the sugar until dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool slightly before beating in the eggs. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt and spices, then fold into the honey mixture to form a stiff dough. Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes until firm enough to handle. Heat the oil to 170°C and carefully drop small spoonfuls of dough into the hot oil, frying until golden brown on both sides, approximately 2-3 minutes total. Drain on kitchen paper and serve warm, traditionally dusted with icing sugar or drizzled with additional honey.
