Sift together the flour, baking powder and salt into a mixing bowl. Rub in the cold butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, then stir in the sugar and dried fruit. Beat the egg with the milk and add to the dry ingredients, mixing until you have a soft dough. Heat a griddle or heavy-bottomed frying pan over a moderate heat until evenly hot. Drop spoonfuls of the mixture onto the hot surface and cook for about 3-4 minutes until the underside is golden brown, then carefully flip and cook the other side for a further 2-3 minutes until cooked through. Serve warm, traditionally buttered and dusted with sugar.
