Crush the cardamom pods and cloves together in a mortar to release their oils and break them into smaller pieces, removing the cardamom husks if preferred. In the same mortar, combine the fresh bird's eye chillies, garlic cloves, and ginger root, then pound vigorously until a fine paste forms. Add the salt and continue grinding to incorporate it evenly throughout the mixture. Warm the olive oil in a small pan until just heated through, then pour it over the chilli paste whilst stirring constantly to combine and infuse the oil with the spices. Transfer to a serving bowl and allow to cool slightly before serving as a condiment with injera or other Ethiopian dishes.
