Soak the haricot beans overnight in cold water, then drain and rinse. Boil in fresh water for 1 hour until nearly tender, then drain. Fry the bacon and onions together in a heavy casserole until softened. Stir in the cooked beans, ketchup, sugar, mustard, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Cover and bake at 160°C for 2 to 3 hours, stirring occasionally and adding water if needed to maintain a thick saucy consistency. The beans should be very tender and the sauce rich and glossy.
