Rinse the dried fruit thoroughly under cold water and place in a large pot with the water. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and add the sugar, cloves, and cinnamon stick, stirring until the sugar dissolves completely. Simmer gently for 20-25 minutes until the fruit is soft and the liquid has developed a rich colour and flavour. Slice the lemon and add it to the pot during the final 5 minutes of cooking. Strain the kompot through a fine sieve into a clean jug, pressing gently on the fruit to extract all the liquid. Serve warm or chilled, depending on preference.
