Preheat the oven to 200°C and lightly grease a loaf tin. Mix together the wholemeal flour, white flour, wheatgerm, bran, salt and bicarbonate of soda in a large bowl. Warm the buttermilk slightly and stir in the treacle and softened butter until combined. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir until you have a soft, sticky dough that just comes together. Transfer to the prepared tin, smooth the top, and bake for 45-50 minutes until a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack.
