Cream together the butter and caster sugar until light and fluffy, then beat in the egg and vanilla extract. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together, then fold into the wet mixture until a soft dough forms. Roughly chop the dates and fold into the dough. Drop heaped teaspoons of mixture onto greased baking trays, spacing them well apart. Bake at 180 degrees Celsius for 12-15 minutes until golden brown and set but still slightly soft. Brush with warm ghee immediately after removing from the oven, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
