Mix the laverbread with the medium oatmeal, salt and black pepper until well combined. Shape the mixture into oval or round patties approximately 7cm across and 1cm thick. Heat the butter and oil together in a heavy-bottomed frying pan over a moderate heat. Once the fat is hot and foaming, carefully place the bara lawr cakes into the pan and fry for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy at the edges. Drain on kitchen paper and serve hot, traditionally with bacon rashers and a fried egg for a full Welsh breakfast.
